Cross Street Market
Cross Street Market is a historic public market located in the Federal Hill neighborhood of Baltimore, Maryland, United States. Established in 1846 to serve the growing population of South Baltimore, it is one of the oldest public markets in the country.[1] It runs the full length of Cross Street in between Light Street and Charles Street.
History
[edit]Cross Street Market was originally constructed in 1846, catering primarily to the Irish and German communities in the area.
Over time, the market underwent several transformations. In 1873, a new market house was built alongside the original structure to accommodate the growing demand for fresh produce, meat, and seafood. However, in the 1950s, a devastating 12-alarm fire destroyed much of the market, leading to a significant rebuild in 1952.[2]
In 2019, Cross Street Market reopened after an $8.4 million redevelopment led by Caves Valley Partners. The renovation modernized the interior while preserving the market’s historic character, attracting a new generation of vendors and visitors.
